  1. Insert hook from front to back in the second chain from the hook or designated stitch

  3. YO and pull through both loops on the hook.

Half Double Crochet (hdc): Half Double Crochet Tutorial

  • YO (yarn over) insert hook from front to back of the designated stitch, YO the hook and pick up a loop.
  • YO the hook and pull back through all three loops on the hook.

Working in the Back Loop (bl):

  • Insert the hook through the bl only of each stitch, rather than under both loops of the stitch.
  • Complete the stitch as usual.

The Yarn

As for the yarn, I used Lily’s Sugar’n Cream Cotton four weight yarn in Ecru & Jute. It is always a good idea to use a 100% cotton fiber when making dishcloths or washcloths, since they will hold up well to use and will need to be washed over and over.

Lily Sugar’n Cream

This yarn is made by Yarnspirations, and is a Weight 4 – Medium yarn.

If you’d like to try a different color cotton yarn for your dishcloth, there are over 50 different colors available to pick from.

I picked these particular colors because I thought they would look great in almost any kitchen! Plus, I am a sucker for neutrals!

Easy and Quick Washcloth Pattern

I think the best part of this crochet dishcloth is that there are minimal ends to weave in, which means less work! The pattern requires dropping and picking up the yarn as it is worked up, so you can put down that yarn needle for the most part!

I promise by the time you are finished with your dishcloth you will only have 4 yarn ends to sew in which makes it the perfect quick weekend project! I would suggest using a yarn needle to weave in your ends. It makes it so much easier to finish up.

  1. Can acrylic and scrubby yarn be used for this project? I’m looking to make dishcloths for my kitchen.

  2. Quick question… on row two it says to hdc in bl of 2nd chain from hook then repeat hdc in fl of next stitch and bl of following stitch until the end of the row. If I do this I end up with an odd number of stitches, not even. Am I reading the pattern incorrectly?

  3. Hi Krista–

I always love your patterns, they are so beautiful and easy to understand! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
I do have one quick question for this pattern…in the instructions for the foundation row you state “chain 21 ed”…what does the “ed” mean?
