Penn Button Cowl Crochet Pattern

Skill Level: Easy

Materials

Abbreviations

  • HDC = half double crochet
  • CH = chain
  • ST = stitch
  • BL = back loop
  • SC = single crochet
  • SK = skip

Notes

  • Finished size is approx a 24″ circumference & 7″ height
  • Gauge is 5 STS for every 2″
  • Written in Standard US Terms.

Crochet Button Cowl Pattern Steps

Foundation Row: Ch 70 +2

Row 1: HDC in 2nd CH from hook, HDC in every CH across, turn. (70)

Row 2: CH 2, starting in last HDC from row before HDC in the BL, HDC in the BL of every ST across, turn. (70)

Row 3: Repeat row 2. (70)

Row 4: CH 2, starting in the first ST HDC in the front third loop, HDC in the front third loop in every ST across, turn. (70)

Row 5: CH 2, starting in the first ST HDC in the BL, HDC in the BL of every ST across, turn. (70)

Row 6: Repeat row 4. (70)

Row 7: Repeat row 5. (70)

Row 8: Repeat row 4. (70)

Row 9: Repeat row 5. (70)

Row 10: Repeat row 4. (70)

Row 11: Repeat row 5. (70) do not fasten off

Finishing

OPTION 1: CH 1, hold together the two short ends of the cowl with the wrong side facing out (the side that doesn’t have the knit like look to it) and join them together with 11 SC’s. Fasten off yarn, then weave in loose ends with a yarn needle.

Example of Finishing Option #1

OPTION 2: (with functioning buttons) at the end of row 11, turn your work to the long side of the cowl

Row 1: CH 1, do 23 SC evenly across long side of scarf, turn.(23)

Row 2: CH 1, starting in the first ST HDC, HDC in next ST, * SK 1 ST & CH 1, HDC in next ST, HDC in next ST, repeat from * across for a total of 23 ST’s (the CH 1 count in the ST count for this row), turn. (23)

Row 3:  CH 1, starting in first ST SC, SC in every ST across (this includes those CH 1’s). (23) Fas

Finishing: Fasten off and weave in loose ends with a yarn needle.

ATTACHING BUTTONS

OPTION 1: After weaving in ends attach the 7 buttons with yarn needle & thread evenly along the seam that you just joined with the right side facing out.

OPTION 2: Lay buttons on right side of cowl along short side without the button holes. Line up the buttons evenly with the holes and attach with thread  and the yarn needle.

  2. your link for the coconut buttons takes us to 1 inch buttons instead of 1/2″ buttons. Which do you use for this pattern? I already have the 1 inch buttons from your Andy Cowl/scarf pattern.

    1. Hi Elaine,
      I used the 1/2 inch ones but you could use the 1 inch buttons instead and just put 4 or 5 on instead of the called for 7. I will fix that link now.
