How to Make the Elise Crochet Hat

Read on down to learn about the yarn you’ll want to use and the stitches you’ll need to know to make this unique hat!

The Yarn That’s Perfect for This Beanie

I designed this hat with Lion brand Wool-Ease Tonal Yarn, which is a bulky two-toned color yarn that is gorgeous! Ultimately, I ended up using the Grey Marble color mainly for the incredible mixture of whites and grays throughout. But the bad news is….

Substitute Yarn: As of 2020, this yarn is no longer available, so as a substitution I recommend using Hue & Me from LionBrand. It is available in different yarn colors, so you can make this hat unique to you!

Hue + Me

This yarn is made by Lion Brand, and is a Weight 5 – Bulky yarn.

Fiber: 80% Acrylic, 20% Wool
Yardage: 137
Hook: 6.5 mm (K-10.5)

Plus, it is the same yarn weight, so it will yield a similar hat size to the original yarn that I used.

The Crochet Hook

I used a 9.00 mm crochet hook size to make this hat design. I prefer to work with a Tulip Brand hook or Clover Brand hook. I’ll link it up the Clover brand hook below, so you can check it out, but honestly any 9.00 mm crochet hook would work perfectly fine with this pattern.

9 mm (M/N-13)

9 mm (M/N-13)

This hook is also known as M/N-13 (US), 00 (UK) & 9 mm. You can use it with Weight 5 – Bulky & Weight 6 – Super Bulky yarn weights.

    1. Hi Linda,

This hat is worked in the round and starts with a chain 2. Scroll down to the section titled The Pattern Steps, and you’ll see round 1 and the initial ch.

      Happy Crocheting!

    1. Hi Deb,
You could use a 9 mm and it would work great. The tonal yarn I used was considered a five weight yarn but it was more like a bulky 6 weight.

      Happy Crocheting!

  1. Hey – I’m struggling to keep 37 stitches. Because I sl into first hdc and ch doesn’t count as a stitch I lose that first stitch that the sl is in. Or does that count as the skipped stitch and I come back to it?
