Materials Needed

Take a look below at the yarn as well as the other tools you will need to have on hand to make this basket. They are easy to find, which will make crocheting this basket simple!

Yarn

To make this storage basket just like mine, you will need approximately 220 yards of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in Slate or if you’d like to make this basket more you then use any color you’d prefer.

I listed out a few of my favorite yarn colors of this line if you’d like to make your basket with those colors.

Tip: Make it Stronger by Using Two Skeins at Once!

If you use only one skein at a time, you will get a looser, not as sturdy basket.

I decided to use one skein because I am using my basket for my yarn stash, and it didn’t have to be quite as stiff. If you are wondering how to stiffen a crochet basket, then I can help!

I would suggest using two skeins of yarn at the same time and working up the basket pattern as written below.

Other Tools

You will also need a 9 mm crochet hook (any brand will work!), yarn needle and scissors. I love my Lion Brand yarn needles, but again, any brand will work!

  1. I found this to be a very easy project and one I could finish in a day. Yarn I found easily at Walmart. Have made several already. One that I made a little bigger than pattern is now a small kitten basket.

  2. Hi Krista thank you so much for this crochet basket pattern I only have Aran weight yarn which I am doubling but the gauge is a lot smaller if I make the base larger with more stitches will this affect the handles. Would love your help please.
    Best wishes
    Christine

    1. Hi Christine,
If you can maybe try tripling it to see if the gauge is met that way. 🙂 You can make the base larger but I would suggest making the handles longer too to fit.

      Happy Crocheting.

      Krista

  3. I made a smaller version of the basket. I’m thinking about making them for Xmas and filling with candy, candle, hot cocoa mix, etc. Thank you very much for the pattern. I have a pic if you’d like to see it. And I will be starting the bath mat pattern this week! Can’t wait.

  4. I ended up barely getting to my second skein to make this and they’re only 87 yards each. Seems like the “220 yds” for this project is incorrect. I’ve decided to remake it and adding to the bottom to make it wider and then a little taller.

  5. Love this basket pattern! Thank you so much for sharing it! Actually, I love most of the patterns that you design!

  6. Thank you for this beautiful basket pattern. I just purchased some sale chunky yarn and am anxious et going with this new pattern. I love that your patterns are free. Thanks again.

  7. Good day Krista,
Thanks for sharing this pattern. I’d like to make it taller, how can I adjust the pattern? My first time making a basket so I’m a little hesitant.
    Thank you,

    Mary

  8. Hi, the basket looks great.
I want to make a bigger basket, what should I do in consideration of the pattern?
    Thanks

  9. I love idea of making this basket. I have SO MANY skeins of yarn though and am wondering if using two skeins of regular yarn would work instead of using thick and chunky?

  10. This looks great! But I have one question… are the directions provided to be made with two strands of yarn at the same time or just one? Or will it work for either, depending on the stiffness of the basket you want?
    Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Kathy,
Thank you! 🙂 The pattern will work with either 1 or 2 skeins. 🙂 I made it with one because I only needed it for yarn but if you’d like to use it for something that won’t hold up the sides I’d suggest using 2 skeins of yarn.
      Happy Crocheting!
