Our page and printable blanket size chart will help you out. This blanket sizes chart is similar to our free hook sizes chart.

I hope you enjoy this chart and find it useful when deciding on exactly what size of crochet blanket you want to make.

How Blanket Sizes Work in Crochet

The first thing I would like to mention is that most of these blankets sizes are approximate. They don’t need to be followed to the exact measurement to work just fine.

For example, if you would like to make a throw blanket but want it to be 35″ x 35″ instead, that is OK!

However, bedding sizes are different. If you want to make a crochet queen size blanket comforter for a bed, the blanket at the very least needs to cover the top of the bed.

Our blanket sizes account for some drape on three sizes of the bed. Drape is the extra quilt amount that is “draped” over the sides of the mattress.

So while we list exact dimensions below, in reality, choosing a blanket size is what works best for your situation.

Modern Crochet Baby Blanket is available in 8 different blanket sizes

Standard Crochet Baby Blanket Sizes

Below, you will see the common blanket sizes for anything related to a baby or a child. You will see some patterns deviate from these sizes slightly, usually so that a particular repeatable pattern does not get interrupted, like a chevron or ripple stitch.

The average size of a baby blanket is 42 inches by 52 inches.

Take a look at the baby blanket size chart below.

All the sizes listed here are in a Width x Length format.

Crochet Baby Blanket Sizes

All of these baby blanket sizes can be adjusted to fit the specific situation. Unlike bedding, baby blankets are unofficial sizes, and are more of an “accepted range”.

Commercial blankets come in much more standardized sizes, but when it comes to homemade items like crochet baby blankets, these sizes are estimates.

Many times with projects like crocheted baby blankets, the hook size, tension, and gauge can vary from person to person, making the blanket dimensions slightly different depending on who makes them.

Crochet Couch Blanket Sizes

Blankets for couches and home decor are often called throw or lap blankets. Lap blankets are to be used by anyone in a sitting position, such as someone sitting in a wheelchair.

Throw blankets can really be any size as they are just “thrown” onto the back of a chair, couch or other piece of furniture. Throw blankets are some of my favorite blankets to make because they are perfect to cuddle up in while watching TV (or crocheting!) on the couch.

Crocheting Blankets/Afghans/Quilts for Beds

Common Mattress Sizes

Some of the largest blankets you can crochet are for quilts on top of beds. To determine the correct size of quilt, you first need to understand the common sizes of mattresses. Next, you’ll have to decide if you want to include a “drape” or “drop” for your blanket.

A “drape” will allow the blanket to hang down the sides of the mattress anywhere between 8–20 inches (20-50 cm). Our blanket size table below includes 8-10″ extra on three of the sides to account for the drape.

Take a look at all the full-size blanket measurements below.

How Do You Add a “pillow tuck” Allowance to the Blanket?

Pillow tucks are usually a standard 20 inches added to the length of the blanket. This allows the blanket to fold down over top the pillows. This amount is added to any of the bed sizes above, and does not change based on mattress size.

What’s the Difference Between an Afghan, Blanket and Quilt?

In crocheting, the terms “blanket”, “quilt” and “afghan” can all typically be used interchangeably. Outside the crochet world, quilts are often stitched-together pieces of fabric, but that isn’t the case here.

I also believe the term “afghan” is an older term that invokes a type of nostalgia, while “blankets” is more of a catch-all term for these projects of any size or generation.

What is a Full/Queen Combo?

Some blanket manufacturers decided that to limit their product lines, they were going to create one size blanket that worked for both the full/double mattress and the queen.

The two mattresses are only a couple of inches different, so if you add a couple of inches to both sides, then it should work for both!

  1. There is a thick striped blanket at the very top of this blog page. It has navy blue, gray, and a tannish color. It is not chevron. I really like the Stitch, but I’m curious what pattern you used. I’m a beginner and I’d love to know.

  2. Hi, can you share the link on how to make the blanket in the very first picture, including the type and color of yarn? The navy, gray and beige one? Thank you! I have made both the Alissa and the Jane blankets and love them both.

  3. The pattern want to do is a chevron crochet, the pattern calls for 168 chains plus 3 for turn, how can I scale this down to around 130 chains.

    1. Hi Karen,

Usually (but not always) patterns will have the multiple included. For example: Chain 5 + 3 to change the size. Does the pattern you want to use include the multiple?
