The Yarn You’ll Want to Use for This Crochet Scarf

If you can get your hands on Mandala Ombre Cake yarn, which is a worsted weight four yarn, you will be happy! I was thrilled when I found this at my local Walmart and in the color I had been searching for, Mantra!

I knew this color would be perfect for this scarf because it fades from one color to the next, which means fewer ends for me to weave in! The color changes are beautiful in this yarn and very subtle.

The main part of the scarf honestly looks like you are using a couple of different colors of yarn, when in reality it is all one cake of yarn. There are many colors available in the Ombre line, so have fun with it! You can see from the picture below how the yarn changes beautifully from one color to the next.

For the border, I used Feels Like Butta from Lion Brand in the color Ice. It goes perfectly with the ombre colors of the Mandala yarn.

This yarn is made by Lion Brand, and is a Weight 4 – Medium yarn.

The Crochet Stitches You’ll Need to Know for This Scarf

You will only need to know a couple of basic crochet stitches for this whole scarf! If you can double crochet, half double crochet, single crochet and chain then you can make this design!

• Double Crochet (dc)
• Half Double Crochet (hdc)
• Single Crochet (sc)

I have used these stitches so many times over the years in my designs, like for the double crochet scarf and more!

The scarf is worked in groups of clusters and chains for each row. The stitch cluster sequence, for example, for one row is worked in groups of three double crochet clusters. It is easy, just work a repeat of three double crochet stitches over and over. Ombre Free Crochet Scarf Pattern

Skill Level: Intermediate

Materials

• 1 cake of Mandala Ombre in Mantra by Lion Brand or 344 yards of any four weight yarn
• Less than 1 skein of Feels like Butta in Ice by Lion Brand or less than 100 yards of any four weight yarn
• Size H 5 mm
• Yarn needle

Crochet Abbreviations

• ch = chain
• sc = single crochet
• hdc = half double crochet
• dc = double crochet
• sk = skip
• st = stitch

Finished Size

• Approximately 8 inches high (with border) x 74 inches in length when gauge is followed.

Notes

• Change the size by using a multiple of 3 +2
• Gauge is approximately 12 stitches, or 4 three double crochet clusters for every 4 inches. Learn why gauge is important in crochet projects.
• The pattern is written in Standard US terms

The Crochet Scarf Pattern Steps

Ch 192 +2

Foundation Row: Ch 194, in the third ch from the hook {sc, ch 2, sc} *sk 2 ch’s, {sc, ch 2, sc}, repeat from * across, skip next ch, ending with 1 hdc in last ch, turn. (193)

Row 1: Ch 3, * 3 dc in next ch 2 space (cluster), repeat from * across, ending with 1 dc in top of turning ch, turn. (193)

Row 2: Ch 2, *in the second dc of the 3 dc cluster {sc, ch 2, sc}, repeat from * across ending with 1 hdc into the top of the turning ch from the row before, turn. (193)

Row 3: Repeat Row 1

Row 4: Repeat Row 2

Row 5: Repeat Row 1

Row 6: Repeat Row 2

Row 7: Repeat Row 1

Row 8: Repeat Row 2

Fasten off the Mandala Yarn securely

Border Steps

• Start in the corner space and work alongside one of the short sides first.
• Join in the Feels Like Butta Yarn, Ch 3, Make 2 dc’s into the corner space, working along the down the outside of one of the short sides of the scarf make 3 double crochets into the rows that we repeated row 1 on.
• When you get to the corner, make 3 double crochets into the corner space. Ch 2, work 3 more double crochets into the same space.

• You will end up with a total of seven 3 double crochet clusters along the short side.
• Next, *work 3 double crochets into the space between the 3 double crochet clusters of the first row of the scarf. Repeat this for a total of 63 times excluding the two corner 3 double crochet clusters. You should have a total of 65 clusters including the two corner 3 double crochet clusters.
• At the corner, double crochet 3 times into the corner space, Ch 2, work 3 more double crochets into the same space. Working along the down the outside of the other short side of the scarf make 3 double crochets into the rows that we repeated row 1 on.

• When you get to the corner, make 3 double crochets into the corner space. Ch 2, work 3 more double crochets into the same space.
• Next, *work 3 double crochets into the space between the 3 double crochet clusters of the first row of the scarf. Repeat this for a total of 63 times excluding the two corner 3 double crochet clusters. You should have a total of 65 clusters including the two corner 3 double crochet clusters.
• At the last corner, double crochet 3 times into the corner space, Ch 2 and end with a slip stitch in the top of the first chain 3 of the border.

Finishing

• Fasten off all the yarn ends and weave them in with a yarn needle throughout the scarf.
